Hidden places to visit in Marche

Explore the beauty of the surrounding region of Pesaro and Hotel Delle Nazioni on a day trip

Marche is an area rich in all kinds of diversity and beauty. Beaches on the Adriatic are surrounded by hills, medieval villages, unspoilt nature trails, and gorges slowly eroded by rivers over time.

But how do you get to these wonderful places? Hotel Delle Nazioni, on the seafront in Pesaro, has the answer!

Here is our list of the top three hidden gems in the Marche region!

  • The Marmitte dei Giganti, also called the Little Canyon on the Metauro. It is a 30-metre deep gorge formed by the erosive powers of the Metauro River. It is located between Fossombrone and Calmazzo, about 40 minutes' drive from the hotel. In addition to its striking rock faces, it is also home to the Marmitte dei Giganti (Giants' Pots) because, according to popular tradition, giants used to cook wild boar and other animal dishes here. You can also go canoeing during the day and at night.
  • Not far from Fossombrone, in the area of San Martino del Piano, are the remains of the Roman city of Forum Sempronii, which stands on the Via Flaminia, the main link between Rome and the Po Valley. Little is known about the town’s origins but its name suggests that its founding is closely linked to the Sempronia family, most probably the tribune of the plebs Gaius Sempronius Gracchus.
  • Montemaggiore al Metauro: here, the Germans planned to build the Gothic Line in the last few years of World War II, a defensive line to slow down the advancing Allies. But on 25 August 1944, Winston Churchill and General Harold Alexander arrived in Montemaggiore and liberated the village from the Germans. Its city walls, where Churchill took strategic photographs to prepare for the offensive against the Germans (so-called Operation Olive), are famous.

These are just three of the hidden gems in the local area.
